about
The Darling River is entirely too vital to be allowed to die. For many communities it's their lifeblood: Brewarrina, Bourke, Wilcannia, Menindee, Pooncarie and others. Its survival is equally critical to all Australians. It’s our heritage, and it has to be there for future generations.
Stand on the banks of the mighty Darling and admire the grandeur of massive red gums, and pelicans standing on half-submerged logs. See where a paddle steamer has been abandoned in the middle of a dry river bed, having once run aground. Save The Darling.
lyrics
DANCING ON THE DARLING greg champion
this river system is the pride of this land
since way way back, long before the white man
it’s carved in the country it’s older than time
don’t let ‘em take what’s yours and what’s mine
let the river run, let the water come on down
and we’ll be dancing on the Darling when it hits Menindee town
once paddle steamers ran right up to Bourke
opened up the country, kept people in work
one hundred years later, we cannot stand by
stand by and let this waterway die
it was fed by the Condamine & Warrego
back when those waters used to still flow
& the Namoi & the Barwon, they all ran south
till their waters reached the Murray mouth
they formed a water authority
to protect this river for you and for me
it was s’posed to help keep this river alive
well take a long now is it gonna survive
